ImproveSF

ImproveSF is an online platform to provide opportunities for government and citizens to work together by connecting civic challenges to community problem-solvers. We host a series of curated challenges that are open for anyone to submit ideas and win unique prizes from our Rewards Store.

ImproveSF was built out of the belief that the best way to tackle challenges that affect the community is with the community. By using a platform that allows members of the community to contribute from their own homes and on their own schedules, we believe that we will be able to engage a broader audience. And with this broader audience comes a broader range of ideas, solutions and participation.

So, who should participate in ImproveSF? You! We want your ideas, your feedback, your comments and your point of view. Together, we can create a better San Francisco!

If you have additional questions about ImproveSF, visit our FAQ page.

The logo

We wanted to reflect the enthusiasm and energy around the level of civic participation in our great City. We did this by using a “badge” aesthetic to evoke awarding our community for improving our city. We feature iconic structures and use the color “International Orange” was selected because of its history on the Golden Gate bridge.

Originally the orange vermilion color was used as a sealant to the bridge, but locals persuaded Irving Marrow the architect to use the vibrant color rather than covering it with silver or grey as is typical with bridges.

International Orange is important to ImproveSF because it symbolizes the power of people. It was the persuasion of people voicing their ideas that contributed to the Golden Gate bridge standing an iconic structure.

A big thank you to Alexander Tafla who volunteered to design our logo.

Co-Designing with MindMixer

We wanted to demonstrate that government can both enable innovation and also be innovative. We work very closely with MindMixer to design product features that they pilot with us before pushing them out to their other client cities. We are excited to partner with them to define this alternate way of engaging citizens in civic problem solving.

This project is made possible by the City and County of San Francisco, SPUR, the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services and the Department of Technology
