Seven in ten San Franciscans rode a bike in 2009, making our bike lanes one of the most-utilized green assets in the city. Many of our lanes use proven techniques to make the route safer for all ages. Segments of Market Street boast physical separation, green paint, and bike boxes. Valencia Street has an innovative Green Wave where North/South traffic lights are timed for 13 miles per hour, making the street safer for pedestrians and cyclists by calming auto traffic while maintaining momentum for cyclists. As an inexpensive resource that improves quality of life in local neighborhoods, bike lanes are the best green asset to help San Francisco be a ecological role model for other American cities.
