The Panhandle Bike Path is a multi-use pathway used not only by cyclists, but runners, walkers, strollers and dog-walkers. Unfortunately, this mix has proven to be dangerous with regular reportings of collisions between cyclists and others.

One solution to this dangerous mix is to provide a separated bikeway, similar to what was done along JFK Drive in GGP by sliding the parking lane over into the first lane of traffic, and providing a protected bicycling lane where parking currently resides.

A second solution, that should be implemented whether or not the protected bike lane gets installed is for better signage. Currently, there is not a single sign along the path. Some idears include:
-Slower users to the right, pass on the left
-Slow Down!
-At every intersection there should be signage to watch for pedestrians crossing (along the bike path) and on the crossing paths, watch for cyclists
-At Baker, Masonic and Stanyan, recommend that pedestrians and dog walkers use the south pathway and cyclists use the north pathway (this should also be posted on the south pathway
-An indication of where to go with arrows directing towards Oak or Hayes when leaving the Panhandle on Baker

My work recently moved to San Jose and I ride the Guadelupe River Trail from the train station to my office at least 2 days/week. With the repaving of this pathway, they have included some good signage that SF could use as an example. They are clear, unobtrusive yet noticable, and fairly simple.
