Dangerous Streets: Not in San Francisco
with the very sad death of a pedestrian in the vicinity of Masonic and Euclid, I noticed that ALL of the streets in that area were built to move cars through at a high speed. Pine, Bush, Masonic, Presidio, Euclid, the whole neighborhood behaves more like a freeway interchange than city streets, and it shows in the lifeless sidewalks and lack of community feeling. How can we re-design the street grid here to make the neighborhood more pedestrian-friendly? More housing? Better landscaping? More trees? Convert Pine/Bush back into 2-way streets? All of the above? This area makes it very evident that we can facilitate the movement of cars, or plan for pedestrian safety, but not both.
