The challenge I think San Francisco is currently facing is unreasonable amounts of trash on sidewalks, green spaces, and other public areas. It is important to me because I know that it affects the health of the environment in which we live. It also harms wildlife near and far (as trash travels by wind to the bay). Most of all, it's just sad walking through so much trash everywhere. My partner and I pick up litter with our neighbors at least once a month as part of a community wide clean-up effort in our neighborhood. It seems like each month there is more trash and more disgusting things to be picked-up. We also call 311 regularly to pick up dumped couches, mattresses, and other large items left on the sidewalks - but this too seems to be a growing issue. My idea for a solution involves educating all San Franciscans about the affects of littering and not disposing of garbage properly. The campaign would have to be multilingual with messages on all forms of media: newspapers, weeklies, television, radio, websites, billboards, trash receptacles, buses, etc.
