Looking for a restaurant that combines a welcoming environment with Southern cooking? "Auntie April's" is not only where diners go to fill up on chicken and waffles and other down-home dishes, but a solid partner in the community.

While April has cooked throughout her entire life, learning recipes in her grandparents' kitchen when she was a child, the restaurant business wasn't a direct path. She held a number of jobs in other fields unrelated to her now well-known small business. It wasn't until she went into a partnership with another restaurateur several years ago that she decided she wanted to open her own place.

She will tell you that Auntie April's is about more than just the food. "The young people in the neighborhood call me 'Auntie' because I'm a mentor to them. They'll stop by the restaurant to talk about what's going on in their lives. And that's really satisfying for me, to be able to make a positive impact."
