About the design: Every icon here was made from scratch for the purpose of this project, and in many cases meant to be ambiguous. Each subject is different, but all can be researched at SFPL! In addition to being a library card I wanted it to be an interesting object, incorporating aspects that may engage anyone, much like the library itself. Your eye can move around it, so as you wait at the bus stop you'll have things to look at or think about. The queen of hearts might make you think about poker, gambling, magic, a game you used to play with your dad, the symbolism chosen for cards or a woman. I chose it over, say, a six of diamonds or even a king of clubs because I felt it connected to more ideas. The clock inside of a gear could be time, the mechanics of time, watches or mechanical things in general, etc... That is kind of how I thought this design might work. A little more about the icons: These icons were made primarily in Inkscape (and a little on Adobe Illustrator), which is an open source vector based illustration tool. Some were difficult to come up with such as "spirituality religion divinity" subjects which are important and even crucial to many people. As I came from a specific tradition it was difficult to create an icon that would be accessible, so i wrote the words which are interesting to define and think about. Lower right corner is an eye of a tiger, the formula is Euler's identity. The letters include modern and ancient languages from around the world, I couldn't include all the ones I wanted, so I chose prevalent languages, and a few that have to do with myself and my friends. Record players are loved by young and old. People from the bay area have made some of the largest innovations regarding the use of a turntable as musical instruments. The Giants are doing pretty well so I chose a baseball as the sports icon. If the QR code on the right works it takes your mobile phone to the url http://m.sfpl.org
