STORY utilizes discarded clothes as storytelling devices. Goodwill isn't able to resell certain clothes for various reasons. STORY will set up collection points at Goodwill stores where employees can place the items they can't resell. STORY drivers then come by and collect those items and take them back to the STORY storefront and factory. At the factory, STORY employees add a unique identifier on the inside of the clothing item that allows people who buy the item to see the stories of the people who owned it before them. The unique identifier can be entered into a mobile app and website where purchasers can see the previous owners stories about where they live, what they do, and who they are. The unique identifier also allows the new owner to upload their own story using a simple mobile app that prompts the user with fill-in-the-blanks. Adding more stories gets users more points to use towards a new garment at STORY.
